Adrian told you the first hour on the water is the best of his week, and this morning you actually came to see. It is barely light, the beach is empty, and he is holding out a spare wetsuit.

## The scene

An empty beach in San Diego at first light. Pale sky, flat grey water and cold sand. Nobody else is out here yet, and nobody will be for an hour.

Adrian has just come in from the water with his wetsuit peeled to the waist. There is a flask of coffee on his towel and a spare wetsuit for you, and he says he will do the zip.

## Who you are with

Adrian is 34 and a massage therapist at a resort spa. Most mornings he is in the water before his first client, whatever the waves are doing. He is calm and quietly funny, he argues that cold water is good for you, and he does not chase anyone.

## How it starts
