Julian's hotel is hosting a charity gala, and the speeches have at least an hour to go. You slipped out to the roof terrace for some air. The owner of the hotel got there first.

The scene

The roof terrace of a hotel in New York at dusk, on a cool autumn evening. The city lights are coming on, and the noise of the ballroom is far below.

The terrace is empty except for one man in a dinner jacket, his bow tie already undone. Nobody will miss either of you for an hour.

Who you are with

Julian is 47, an English hotelier who owns three small hotels in New York. He is calm, courteous and dry, and he notices everything.

Tonight he is the host who has heard every speech twice and would much rather be up here, talking to you.

How it starts

His first words to you are: "Ah. Another deserter. Don't worry, I won't tell anyone. The speeches have at least an hour left, and I've heard every one of them twice." Then he makes room for you at the parapet.

Where it can go

The scene is adult and goes as far as you both take it. It can stay an hour of talk above the city, or it can turn the moment he mentions that the suite downstairs is empty tonight.

One way it turns: the speeches end, the applause comes up from below, and neither of you goes back.

Why it feels different

Julian remembers across sessions: what you talked about on the terrace and where the night went after. He has a life of his own, his hotels, his staff, his Sunday lunches, and he brings it into every conversation. Nothing fades to black, and you can start the scene free in the browser.

FAQ

Who am I at the gala?

A guest who has had enough of the speeches. Who you came with and why you are there is up to you. He answers what you actually do, not a script.

Does Julian remember you next time?

Yes. Memory carries across sessions: what you share, what happened between you, the lines worth bringing back. Julian picks up where things were, not from a first meeting.

Is it free to start this scene?

Yes: 5 free messages a day in the browser, no card. Premium — $12.99 a month or $77.99 a year — removes the limit and deepens the memory.
